In the April 2010 issue of Trout and Salmon Magazine Editor Andrew Flitcroft and Clive Mitchelhill have tested 9' 5wt rods.
Clive is a full-time professional game-angling instructor with 40 years of fishing experience. Andrew describe him self: "My
casting ability is typical of a frequent river angler – with experience limited mainly to roll and overhead casts. I don't
hold any casting qualifications but I do have 30 years of fly-fishing experience".
Their description of the ideal 5wt rod is:
"A 9 ft 5-weight fly-rod should be light and comfortable in the hand so that you can fish with it all day. The rod should
have a degree of middle action for it to roll cast easily and accurately and with the minimum of effort. It should deliver
accurate overhead casts at short to medium range without compromising the delicate delivery of a fly."
In the end of the article there are a summary of the diffrent categories and their best rods. This is what the guys says about the Fario: Clive says: "The Guideline Fario was my favourite rod in this test. Given its ability to easily fulfil the criteria of a 9 ft 5-weight river rod, at almost half the price of the Sage and Loomis, it has to be excellent value for money." Andrew says: "As for Guideline – more well-known in the salmon world – they really have come up with something special with the Fario and, taking value for money into account, it really deserves the top spot. However, the Marryat ran it very close – only the Marryat’s handle separated the two and if you’ve got bigger hands than I, it could be for you."
