The Original Templedog : Guideline

I tied this pattern the first time in 85’ for the autumn fishing in River Em. The combination of Brown/Black Wing and Gold body with Orange dyed Badger as body hackle with Flashbou 6924, 6911 Rainbow and Red, make this fly outstanding in any humus/brown coloured water like The Mörrum and The Em.

Which were my “home waters” during that time and where I also developed many of my patterns in the early days. The Original Tempeldog have many names these days and it’s also one of the most copied patterns. But if I would credit myself, it’s also one of the most spread and best contemporary pattern used today.

ORIGINAL TEMPELDOG

Tube: Black, Medium and Small, FITS Tubing. Put together with the Tungsten tube for balance.

Tungsten Tube: 6mm. (Can be replaced by a FITS Turbo, Copper or Gold).

Tag: Gold Oval Tinsel no.15.

Butt: Fl. Fiber, Hot Orange.

Underbody: White Floss.

Body: 2/3 Gold tinsel.

Body: 1/3 SSS DUB, Rainbow from Hell mixed with Octopuzzy Red and Alta Gold.

Body Hackle: Silver Badger, dyed Orange.

Ribb: Gold Oval No. 17.

Wing: Drk Brown Tempeldog or Fox , Black Tempeldog or Fox.

SSS Angel Hair HD: Alta Gold, Nasty Rusty

Flash: (Flashabou 6911 Red), Flashabou 6928 Sunburst. Strands of the Holo. Copper Flash from the new 6943 Flashabou, Fire Tiger.

Front hackle: Soft Saddle or a Ostrich Spey Hackle, Black.

Cheeks. Nat. JC.

Head: Black.

The tube is a combination of FITS Medium and Small. I also have added a 6mm Tungsten tube for balance.
* Stretch the FITS small tubing in one end until you can push on the Tungsten Tube.
* Make notches at the end of the Small tubing. Use Zap A Gap and push the tubes together

TYING DESCRIPTION

1: Heat the FITS Tube needle with a lighter.

2: Push the medium tube into the needle so it expands enough for the small FITS tubing to fit inside it.

3: Slide the Tungsten Tube back towards the splice between the tubes and your tube is ready.

4: Tie in 3 turns of Oval rib for tag. Use Flouro Fiber in Hot Orange for tag.

5: Oval Gold Tinsel. Floss, Gold Tinsel.

6: Finished under-body of floss.

7: Tie in one Metz soft hackle and one orange badger hackle. Wind the gold tinsel for the body.

8: Mix SSS Dub: Rainbow from Hell, Octupuzzy Red, Alta Gold for front body. Wind the Badger Hackle, secure with the ribbing.

9: Tie in first wing section. Tips facing forward. Add strands of Sunburst flashabou.

10: Divide the wing section in half and fold it back. Add strands of SSS Nasty Rusty.

11: Fold back the remaining wing section.

12: Wind the Black, Soft hackle. Tie in a new Wing section. Longer than the first. Tips facing forward.

13: Divide the wing section in half and fold it back, Add strands of Alta Gold SSS Angel Hair HD.

14: Tie in a Black, Metz Soft Hackle. Longer in fiber than the first hackle.

15: Tie in strands of Sunburst, Red Flashabou and Copper strand from Fire Tiger Flashabou. Strands of Peacock Pearl Angel Hair and a section of Black Hair for the back.

16: Add JC for Cheeks. (optional).

17: Cut the tube and leave 2-3mm. Burn the head with a lighter.

18: For a nice head. Varnish first with a layer of Black Cellire and a layer of Clear Cellire.
